Blame (Swanky Hotel Music B-Side)

by M. Walker

about

Along with writing and recording a lot of new material, I've been digging through my production archives to distract from quarantine stress. I recently came across this old number called “Blame” that I’d nearly forgotten. I wrote and tracked it years ago, back when I was working on the material for Swanky Hotel Music. At the time I felt like it didn't fit in with the rest of the other songs on that EP and so it fell asleep on my hard drive.
________

The lyrics are about a friend of mine who was sad at the time (they’re not sad anymore). The whole idea was to remind them that blaming yourself for the hardships of life has more to do with the world telling you you’re not good enough than it has to do with reality. We can’t change our pasts nor can we control our futures. You are great just the way you are and life is just generally fucked up (look around).
_______

This weekend I took out the project, brushed up the audio, and here it is in all its B-side glory, free for your listening. Big thanks to @scottriff for his contributions - I'm sure he forgot all about this by now. Thanks to @jimenoacid for lending @walkerlukens the drum machine I used for this song - they both probably forgot about that by now. Thanks to @bartosuerte for the album art. Link in bio.

lyrics

"I could never blame you
or shame you for where you've been.
You never looked so bad or seemed so sad.
I don't know how you get on.
We could never go back
or move the past
from where it's been."
